The amount of the grant is CHF 1,600.- per month from 15 September to 15 July, for a duration not exceeding the regulation minimum period of the programme (according to the programme, one-and-a-half years or two years subject to deduction for paid placements or exempt semesters, if any). Abandonment of the programme results in suspension of the grant.
Required conditions

The Application University candidate must be the holder of a degree from a foreign university.
The qualification held by the candidate must be deemed equivalent to the UNIL Bachelor’s degree.

Selection procedure

Application University Candidates complete the "UNIL Master’s Grant" form and submit their application to the Office for socio-cultural affairs (SASC, Unicentre, University of Lausanne, CH-1015 Lausanne, info.sasc@unil.ch) by 15 December 2011 at the latest. The application is examined by the University Rectorate to determine whether the candidate is admissible. In the event of a positive decision, the application is forwarded by the SASC to the UNIL Faculty responsible for the Master’s on which the candidate wishes to be enrolled. The Faculty selects applications and notifies the SASC of its opinion based on the candidate’s qualities, motivation and suitability for the Master’s programme. The SASC forwards shortlisted applications to the selection committee which will award grants to students meeting all criteria according to the available budget.

Decisions are not open to appeal.

Selection criteria

The grants are intended more particularly for students who distinguished themselves in their university studies and who have difficulty meeting their financial needs for the duration of the Master’s. It is however necessary that the candidates have sufficient financial means to support themselves during the complementary studies that may be required prior to enroll on the Master’s degree.

The laboratory studies how signaling and metabolic control networks interact and how their dysregulation contributes to development of disease. We apply a wide range of experimental technologies such as life-cell imaging, RNAi-screening, functional genomics and proteomics and model disease states in the mouse. Our studies are significantly enriched through collaborations with a number of laboratories from distinct fields including clinical pathology, chemistry and computational sciences. Job Description: A postdoctoral position is available in the Aquaculture Division, Department of Genetics, Stellenbosch University with the focus on Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of farmed kob, Argyrosomus japonicus and Argyrosomus inodorus, and the potential genetic impacts of farmed fish on associated wild fish populations. This project is a collaborative effort with Marine and Coastal Management (Dr Brett Macey) and the University of Pretoria (Prof Paulette Bloomer).

Exciting new industry initiatives are presently underway that are exploring the culture potential of indigenous marine finfish in South Africa. Two such species currently under investigation are the dusky kob Argyrosomus japonicus and silver kob A. inodorus. The proposed cage farming operations along the South African coastline have, however, raised concerns from both the [public] and conservation management authorities about the potential genetic impacts of farmed fish on wild populations. The current project is therefore aimed at the identification of populations or stocks along the southern African coast followed by the establishment of a broodstock management programme that can assist in the appropriate placement of farms and hatcheries as well as and minimize the potential negative genetic impact of farmed animals on wild fish populations.

The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for:
1) The development of molecular genetic markers that enable the detection of fine-scale patterns of genetic variation in populations with potentially shallow genetic sub-structure.
2) The identification of populations/stocks of A. japonicus and A. inodorus along the southern African coast based on species-specific microsatellites.
3) Assisting with the formulation of recommendations for kob farming along the South African coast.

Minimum requirements:
PhD with specialization in Population and/or Evolutionary Genetics or any closely related discipline. Candidates should have proficiency in the relevant population analysis software packages and experience with microsatellite data will be an added advantage. The ideal candidate should also have proven project management experience and ability to set deadlines and meet milestones.

PhD scholarship in modeling of intra-hour power markets, Technical University of Denmark

The Intelligent Energy Systems (IES) is seeking a PhD to widen the scientific activities in the program.

The IES program has recently been established at Risø DTU in order to strengthen and focus the research in this field. The programs contribute to research in energy systems with a high degree of stochastic energy, interconnected to other energy systems, architecture, technologies and systems. Modeling of electricity markets, using high level mathematical methods, taking into account the stochastic nature of renewable energy is one of the key elements. The research is carried out in corporation with other universities, utilities and industry, and participation in international activities will be expected.

The test facility SYSLAB is an experimental platform for research verification and demonstration in a real life power grid, able to run in islanding mode. SYSLAB consists of interconnected sites on the Risø DTU Campus with e.g. battery/storage, wind turbines, generators and loads. The integrated PowerFlexHouse serves research of strategies for Demand control and Technology verification. The facilities are currently being extended. SYSLAB is a part of the Danish Consortium PowerLab.dk and projects for close integration between the four labs are under implementation.

The research topics of the program are:

- Develop the architecture of energy systems that supports the link between energy sectors
- Experimental investigation and characterization of the system aspects of future energy technologies and components
- Development of models and tools for techno-economical analyses of energy systems with intelligent control and flexible technologies/components
Analyses of energy system operation focusing on intelligent control, including analyses of power market design
- Development of control concepts that utilize distributed resources for achieving a robust, flexible and economically integrated energy system
- Utilization of information and communication technologies for establishing an effective infrastructure in the energy system
- Contribute to the development of relevant international standards for control, communication etc, in the energy system

Job description

Socio economic and technical evaluation of intelligent energy systems requires system-wide power system models. The stochastic optimization model Wilmar (wilmar.risoe.dk) is designed for modeling of power markets with a high share of fluctuating renewable power production. It has been used in several international wind integration projects such as the European Wind Integration Study (EWIS). The Wilmar model has hourly time resolution, but it is also important to model and analyse up and down regulation of power production within the hour and the associated intra-hour power markets. The topic of the PhD scholarship is to develop a model for intra-hour power markets with 5 minute time resolution that can interact with the Wilmar model. Such a model is already under development in corporation with the Danish TSO Energinet.dk, and the PhD will use existing work on the topic as a starting point.

Eligible candidates

The applicants should have:

- Master degree in engineering or natural science or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering
- Strong mathematical background
- Preferably experience within operation research e.g. optimization models
- Preferably knowledge on energy systems and technologies

This scheme aims to help young professionals prepare for a leadership role in national and regional policy development and decision-making to resolve biodiversity-related challenges. Over a one-year period, Scholars will undertake an MPhil in Conservation Leadership offered at the University of Cambridge in its partnership with the Cambridge Conservation Initiative, of which UNEP-WCMC is a member. The MPhil placement will be undertaken at UNEP-WCMC focusing on policy-related issues specific to biodiversity in one of the following areas:

 Policy-relevant research on climate change and biodiversity issues, including: the impacts of mitigation policy on biodiversity (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, biofuels); developing adaptation plans for biodiversity in developing countries; relationships between biodiversity and carbon storage.

 Enhancing the World Database on Protected Areas, including: review of information on particular countries and regions; analysis and assessment of particular protected area related issues; gap analysis; impacts on local peoples; and protected area management effectiveness.

 Delivering indicators for assessing progress towards internationally agreed biodiversity targets, including: helping to develop and test global and regional indicators; reviewing links between indicators and assessing their relevance to policy; and clarifying links between global indicators and national datasets.

 Providing analysis and information services related to species listed on international agreements such as CITES and CMS, including desk research and analysis of information for particular taxa and/or regions.

 Research, synthesis, analysis and mapping of marine and coastal biodiversity issues including: sustainable use of marine and coastal goods and services; responses to current and emerging issues such as climate change, assessment of the marine environment, high/deep-seas issues, and the 2012 MPA target.

 Biodiversity informatics, especially geospatial aspects, web mapping, service oriented architectures, distributed metadata catalogues, distributed modelling and data management tools, also development of standards compliant web mapping services and transactional web feature servers. A minimum of twelve months software development experience plus ESRI or Open Source GIS knowledge is required for this area of work.

Candidates may propose other areas of work based on their own areas of interest and experience provided that this is consistent with the Centre's aims and objectives, and that it would make a suitable placement topic. Minnesota State Work Study Program

The State Work Study Program is designed to assist students in meeting their financial need, to provide students with valuable work experiences, and to provide non-profit service agencies, handicapped persons, and persons over 65 with low cost student assistance.

Program Overview

Funds are allocated based on the school's total Minnesota resident full year equivalent (FYE) enrollment and the school's use of prior year funds. The institution awards the funds based on financial need. Using the federal need analysis, need is what remains after the Expected Family Contribution, Federal Pell Grant, and State Grant are subtracted from the institutional price of education. The other financial aid programs, including state work study, are awarded according to the institution's financial aid packaging philosophy. Students must be paid at least minimum wages. Institutions or employers may set wages above the minimum rate.

The financial aid office determines the award. In general, the aid administrator will take the campus budget minus the family contribution, Pell Grant, State Grant, and then divide the remainder between loan and work. The student can refuse to accept either the work or the loan. The aid administrator may increase the loan or work based on the student's request if funds are available.

The research will take place in the Algorithms group in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology, with a special focus on randomized algorithms and the use of probabilistic methods in Computer Science. The department constitutes an international research environment with about 70 faculty and 70 Ph.D. students. They come from more than 30 different countries; about half of them are native Swedes.

Job description

We are seeking candidates for a Ph.D. position within the Algorithms group with a special focus on randomized algorithms and the use of probabilistic methods in Computer Science. In particular, the project is concerned with using tools such as high probability results to design and analyse algorithms for stochastic optimization, or statistical analysis of large data sets. Candidates must therefore have a strong background in discrete probability and algorithm design and analysis techniques.

As a Ph.D. student you are employed by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements. A maximum of 20% of your time will be devoted to other duties at the department, mainly teaching. The remaining time will be devoted to your own courses and research within the project and you are expected to obtain a Ph.D. within a maximum of 5 years.

Required qualifications

A suitable background for the applicant is a strong undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Engineering, Mathematics or related fields. Candidates must have a strong background in discrete probability and algorithm design and analysis techniques. The start of this position is planned for August 1 2010.
